Proxy Settings

Introduction

When WebMeter is installed and configured as your immediate web proxy, all other upstream proxy configuration is carried out within WebMeter.  For example, if you take your laptop to work you may need to switch from a direct connection to the Internet to using a corporate web proxy to access the Internet (or internal corporate sites).  WebMeter provides a familiar interface for this purpose which is modelled on that typically seen in Internet Explorer or Firefox.

To get to the Upstream Proxy Configuration dialog that allows this follow these steps:

  1. Visit the WebMeter icon in the system tray area of your computer.
  2. Right-click on the mouse to display the WebMeter popup menu.
  3. Select Configure > Proxies as shown in Figure 1.
  4. This will result in display of the Upstream Proxy Configuration dialog box as shown in Figure 2.
Details of each of the 4 options are covered in the following sections.

Direct Connection to the Internet

This is the default setting for WebMeter.  With this setting there is no upstream web proxy configured.  This is typically the case with a domestic connection provided by an Internet Service Provider.

Auto-Detect Proxy Settings

Web Proxy Auto Discovery Protocol (WPAD) is a technology which allows browsers to automatically guess the location of a proxy configuration file and take its proxy settings from there.  It is not used much in domestic scenarios but is seen in the corporate context.  If this the case for you, select this option and WebMeter will locate the proxy configuration file in the same way your browser used to.

Manual Proxy Configuration

Sometimes you need to manually specify the upstream proxy by configuring a specific proxy address and port.  In this case select the "Manual Proxy Configuration" option which will enable the text boxes for the address and port information.  If you are going to use the same proxy for both HTTP and HTTPS traffic you can tick the "use the same proxy for all protocols" checkbox.

Automatic Proxy Configuration

It is possible to use a Proxy Auto-config file to specify complex proxy needs.  To do this you select the "Automatic proxy configuration file URL" option.  This enables a text box in which you can specify the URL which points to the configuration file.
